Before Understating what is EPR first we should know what is PRO?
Suppose there is manufacturer selling 10,000 units of TV In India each year, so every year 10,000 TVs will be replaced by his newly launched TV, so where will those 10000 replaced tv will go so as per rules of Government of India it is manufacturers responsibility to collect back e waste worth weight of 10000 old TVs not necessarily TV but any other kind of e waste will also do as mission is to eliminate e waste not companies from there main line of business so this target to collect back from the market is known as Extended producer Responsibility so to complete this target manufacturer appoint companies which work as Producer Responsibility Organization these companies spread awareness, collect and store ewaste, arrange logistics and send it to recycler for end of life treatment of device.
EPR Definition
PRO services assists in EPR Implementation in India. EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility) defines responsibility of any producer or manufacturer of electrical or electronic equipment, for channelization of e-waste to ensure pollution free and eco-friendly management of such waste.
Extended Producer Responsibility may incorporate implementation of take back system or establishing collection centres or both and having agreement with authorised dismantler or recycler either individually or collectively through a PRO recognised by manufacturers or producers.
Role of PRO
PRO (Producer Responsibility Organization) is concept where the producer’s responsibility of managing the e-waste is transferred to the PRO. A PRO’s aim is to manage the end-to-end operations associated with e-waste management & recycling in more cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly way.
As it is mandatory for all producers like importers, manufacturers, retailer, online business, industries etc. in India to seek EPR Implementation authorisation from the CPCB.
